Methodology & Sources

How we calculate every number.

No black boxes. Every figure on this site traces back to a published government table.

What GrossNetPay is

GrossNetPay is a free take-home pay calculator covering all 50 US states plus a dedicated India calculator. Our goal is simple: show salaried and hourly workers exactly what their paycheck will be after taxes — with the math shown, not hidden.

Our calculation methodology

Every calculation runs in your browser using the same published tables a payroll department would use:

  1. Federal income tax: Official IRS tax year 2026 brackets (10%–37%) and standard deductions ($16,100 single / $32,200 married / $24,150 head of household), from the IRS annual inflation adjustment.
  2. Social Security: 6.2% of wages up to the $184,500 taxable maximum for 2026.
  3. Medicare: 1.45% on all wages, plus the additional 0.9% surtax on wages above $200,000 (single) / $250,000 (married).
  4. Pre-tax deductions: Traditional 401(k) contributions reduce income-tax wages but remain subject to FICA. Section 125 health premiums reduce both income-tax and FICA wages, per Treasury regulations.
  5. State income tax: Exact published flat rates or bracket tables where available (including full California and New York brackets). States we have not yet fully wired show a clearly labeled estimate. Nine states have no wage income tax.

Data sources

What our estimates do not include

Local city or county income taxes (e.g., New York City, Philadelphia), W-4 elections beyond filing status such as dependents credits and extra withholding, employer-specific benefits like Roth 401(k) (post-tax) or HSA, garnishments, and state-specific credits. Your real paycheck may differ slightly. We are an estimate tool for planning — not a payroll engine, and not tax advice.

Corrections & updates

Tax tables change every year and occasionally mid-year. When the IRS publishes new figures, we update one file (our tax data module) and every calculator on the site updates. Found an error? We fix them publicly — write to hello@grossnetpay.com.

Who it's for
